In order to give some context to this, as it's coming up to Christmas I thought I'd share my top 5 lessons I've learnt from not only studying media, in particular TV & Radio, but from some of the work experience, I've had.

Lesson 1- Opinions

Everyone has an opinion on what shows to watch, genres they like or how to shoot something, opinions can vary left right and centre. Similar to fake news, learning how to analyze communications its helped me learn what it constructive criticism and what is someone's viewpoint. Now that's not to say someone's point of view is not valuable but rather not to be taken always at face value. But what is important to learn is what is fact and what is fiction. What's going to actually benefit you from knowing and what is a critique which you shouldn't immediately take to heart?

Lesson 2- Knowledge

Learn all you can! Whether it's niche or known commonly, all knowledge is good knowledge. As an individual who's always prided themselves in knowing and learning the strategist of facts. It's come to my attention that although it may seem pointless to know that in panto goodies enter from stage right and baddies from stage left, I've learnt a lot about the industry from watching, reading, listening to podcasts and engaging with all I can.

Lesson 3- Listen

Whether it's overhearing a conversation in passing or meeting a peer for coffee, listening will get you a lot of farther than you think. From hearing about upcoming networking events to trends on social media you'll be a lot better off using your ears.

Lesson 4- Technology

Use tech to your advantage. Living in an age where checking your phone every minute to see whether a person has liked a picture of your cat may seem a bit obsessive, but technology is bigger and more prevalent than it's ever been. Connect with everyone you can in your field, watch tutorials, learn, discover and carve a future for yourself with it. Don't be afraid of it but rather use it to your advantage.

Lesson 5- BE YOURSELF!

As a person who is an extroverted introvert, I've always struggled to find the right balance between speaking up for myself and becoming seemingly bossy. But one thing that in recent months has assured my occasionally cantankerous personality, is not trying to hide who I am when working on group projects. In most cases, an equilibrium will rise to the top, but if in doubt changing who you are won't make things any easier. So just be you.
